The Master of Counter Intelligence..Long Ago and Far Away...
An Alternative Framework In Terms of Plausibility.
If anyone knew what occurred at Roswell it was James Jesus Angleton who was the creative mind , the intellect, the mastermind of CIA counter- intelligence operations , specifically involved in the planning and execution of many, many counter intelligence operations during the infamous Cold War in an era wherein the Soviet Union's potential nuclear parity in this conflict posed against the U.S was to be avoided at all costs. He could keep a secret, many secrets and he took a considerable amount into his grave without speaking about them. Have researchers of Roswell suffered a case of myopia but not conducting research into other scenarios or other equally plausible explanations for a hypothetical extraterrestrial craft. Taking it's ( the craft) existence as sacrosanct..is not this a fundamental error?
That James A was a master of this game was certified by the fact he served under no less than six CIA directors -- including Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, Allen W. Dulles and Richard Helms. To underscore how trusted he was within the CIA and to demonstrate how secretive his plans were, he actually led a compartmentalized spy operation within the CIA itself. Compartmentalization within compartmentalization.
Angleton was a devotee and master of the art of ambiguity based on his lifelong fascination with "Seven Types of Ambiguity" which was first published in 1930 by William Empson when it came to intelligence operations. Of course Roswell remains ambiguous, perhaps intentionally so, According to Empson, the first type of ambiguity is the metaphor, that is, when two things are said to be alike which have different properties such as an alien craft recovery occurred at Roswell and then saying shortly afterward it did not. It was a balloon. This concept is similar to that of metaphysical conceit. Two or more meanings are resolved into one leading to ambiguity. Empson characterizes this as using two different metaphors at once. Of course this can be used to backtrack intent as two or more meanings that do not agree but combine to make clear a complicated state of mind in the author. When the author discovers his idea in the act of writing. Empson describes a simile that lies halfway between two statements made by the author. When a statement says nothing and the readers are forced to invent a statement of their own, most likely in conflict with that of the author. Two words that within context are opposites that expose a fundamental division in the author's mind which could also be labelled a intent of deception....
In recent months, after ruminating on Nick Redfern's theory of what occurred sixty some odd years ago, in Roswell, New Mexico, I sensed that while he was headed in the right direction, his approach to the material, far outpaced the standard ET meme, which now, appears to this writer to frame both a intelligence operation of misdirection intentionally creating using misinformation against the Soviet threat of gaining the Atomic Bomb, and their expansionist strategy in Eastern Europe as well as intentionally, by necessity, misleading it's own citizens. Why has contradictory explanations been posed as a mechanism to keep the ball of Roswell up in the air? Does anyone really think the USAF is this inept? Now you see it and now you don't. Is this ineptitude or the creation of a red herring? Who gave the marching orders? Some low ranking general? I highly recommend Thaddeus Holt's "The Deceivers: Allied Military Deception in the Second World War Two"
One might consider the overall resounding success of Allied games of deceptions planted in the mind of the Axis allies, with simply the ruse of misinformation being disseminated The implied ace..It was more than likely a very fresh memory in the minds of those who faced the possible parity of the Soviet Union in terms of wielding the world's most powerful weapon. The master of ferreting out Soviet spies was James Jesus Angleton. The latter effect of intentional deception toward the citizens of a democracy, rather than the former, is a compelling reason that however pragmatic this game of deception may have seemed at the time as a trade off to misdirect the Soviets and thus draw out and expose Soviet intelligence operations in the United States...however this is an enormous caveat in it's design (which would logically occur to those in consideration of it's implementation), that if it were to be known to it's citizens, that essentially the announcement of a UFO crash in Roswell was a intentional lie, one could then game the effects of this game of deceit, that should this become known, it would create a permanent tear in the fabric of public trust, damage the foundational basis of democracy, and become counter productive in securing the support of it's citizens in relation to future propagandizing the interests of the U.S government in mobilizing it's citizens to support government policies against a looming Soviet threat.
All of this occurred in a climate of enormously tense and rapid deterioration between the former Allies of World War Two. However when the Uncertainty Principle is applied to such a scale and scope of deception, it seems, that in retrospect, by implementing this game, they created later, what they attempted to avoid, in the minds of their own citizens, which only continually underlines, in bold face, a highly skeptical orientation toward any general policy, as the assumption is, that all of this implies a veiled motive held behind a wall of propaganda, whether it is energy policy or the machinations behind the ideal of democracy itself.
Another compelling reason for secrecy, is that if it were to be found that the Roswell crash was a ruse to ferret out Soviet intelligence operations, this ploy could not be used again. One considers Ronald Reagan's use of The Strategic Defense Initiative as an expensive but similar ruse against the Soviets which ultimately proved successful in draining what remained in their coffers, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Soviet economy. A bluff building on a well proven and intentional strategy to pretend an ace was up the sleeve.
1947 was a pivotal year in relation to the dynamics that lowered an "iron curtain" over a substantial portion of Eastern Europe as well as the as the advent of a "Cold War",in particular, Joesph Stalin's failure to assure free elections in the Reich's former territories. In a matter of less than sixty days, the tide would turn. The rapidity of this transformation of U.S policy provides clear evidence of an escalating game, whose global stakes were becoming increasingly and quickly, self evident as the former Allies positioned themselves as adversaries with the implication of a potential for nuclear war, a seeming hairs breath away
On January of 1947, Truman appointed General George Marshall as Secretary of State, and enacted JCS 1779, which decreed that an orderly and prosperous Europe requires the economic contributions of a stable and productive Germany." The directive comported with the view of General Lucius D. Clay and the Joint Chief of Staff over growing communist influence in Germany, as well as of the failure of the rest of the European economy to recover without the German industrial base on which it previously had been dependent. Administration officials met with Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and others to press for an economically self-sufficient Germany, including a detailed accounting of the industrial plants, goods and infrastructure already removed by the Soviets. After six weeks of negotiations, Molotov refused the demands and the talks were adjourned Marshall was particularly discouraged after personally meeting with Stalin, who expressed little interest in a solution to German economic problems. The United States concluded that while the Soviets were drawing a line in the sand, a solution for the territories under Allied control, whose infrastructure was essentially destroyed, could not wait any longer as a defensive issue of their uncertain long term stability. This was of particular concern in relation to Stalin's apparent strategy of increasing the Soviet's newly gained expansion of their territory.
On the morning of March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman appeared before Congress to ask for $400 million of aid to Greece and Turkey. Calling on congressional approval for the United States to "support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures," or in short a policy of "containment," Truman articulated a presentation of the ideological struggle that became known as the "Truman Doctrine." Although based on a simplistic analysis of internal strife in Greece and Turkey, it became the single dominating influence over U.S. policy until at least the Vietnam War. The stage for a potential World War Three
was set.
The Roswell UFO Incident involves the recovery of "alien" technological materials near Roswell, New Mexico, USA, later in that same tumultuous year on July 8, 1947, an incident that, if collaborated by Soviet intelligence operating in the U.S, meant that not only had this increasingly potential enemy had already trumped the Soviet weapons arsenal with atomic weapons, but now there was yet another strong potentiality that the Americans had demonstrated earlier, that the development of yet, then a new secret weapon could be aimed at them across the growing skirmish in Eastern Europe, if such advanced technologies literally fell into the hands of American scientists.
If it was a bluff against Soviet aggression, then the X factor that the U.S had such a enormous increase in military capability, as yet unknown, this would, in effect make the development of the already lagging Soviet atomic weapons capability, a comparative ineffectual footnote, which would be the desired effect in this high stakes poker game. A checkmate.
In February in that year, the infamous, then Congressman, Richard Nixon gave a speech before Congress attacking one Gerhart Eisler who had been revealed as a German communist spy in the U.S. since 1933 who was then being detained on Ellis Island for passport fraud but refusing to testify before HUAC. House agreed with Nixon and voted a contempt charge, but Gerhart escaped to East Germany as ship stowaway.
The first systematic Hollywood blacklist was instituted on November 25, 1947, the day after ten writers and directors were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to give testimony to the House Committee on Un-American Activities. A group of studio executives, acting under the aegis of the Motion Picture Association of America, announced the firing of the artists—the so-called Hollywood Ten—in what has become known as the Waldorf Statement. The threat to national security by those who would refuse to tow the line, in terms of a paranoiac definition of a "red menace" inferred that this climate was well in place in advance of the hearings themselves. Into this environment were placed both the implied and literal threats made to the hapless citizens of Roswell which underlined their compliance.
Two years earlier, in 1945, the Soviet intelligence obtained rough "blueprints" of the first US atomic device, which may have contributed to the Soviet bomb project. In February of that same year, Stalin created Department S to manage a field operation in the U.S which targeted American scientists as Russian intelligence operatives, including Oppenheimer, Bohr, Fermi and Szilard.
Scholar Alexei Kojevnikov has estimated, based on newly released Soviet documents, that the primary way in which the espionage may have sped up the Soviet project was that it allowed them to avoid dangerous tests to determine the size of the critical mass: "tickling the dragon's tail," as it was called in the U.S., consumed a good deal of time and claimed at least two lives.
The intensive activity of the Soviets to gain atomic parity with the West, in particular, the United States is well documented in a CIA paper entitled, "The Cold War Atomic Intelligence Game, 1945-70 From the Russian Perspective" by Oleg A. Bukharin

While the public was enjoying the relative calm later to be characterized as a Post War "Baby Boom" in the United States, another potential big "boom" was the nexus of a furiously escalating game of chicken, whose main front line offense and defense was the intelligence community. The stakes were global in regard to world domination by competing economic systems, as well as the strong potential for disaster, that the following report frames. Worth a read on the CIA website.

The reported event at Roswell, if an intentional misdirection of attention whose purpose was to both draw out Soviet intelligence operatives as well as hang an imaginary bluff in the form of a Sword of Damocles over the adversary's heads, to make them reconsider their post-war expansionist strategy...then the withdrawal of the initial claim would only whet the Soviet appetite in suspecting that a cover up was quickly placed into effect, which further intrigued them. To this day, this is exactly what the effect was, in the eyes of many in the "Ufology" community and remains so to this day.
The intentional trail of breadcrumbs in bomber and transport activities were a ground and field operation coordinated by both the military and the CIA, which then further was given credence by the threatening of local citizens by the military as a staged and demonstrative clue to the Soviets that something was afoot, an imaginary feint in the form of a sleight of hand was handed to the adversary in a misdirection of attention used to implant misinformation.
However, every deception eventually pays the piper sooner, or perhaps in this case, later. The efficacy of such a intelligence operation as a strategic counter intelligence move remains. The disclosure of this operation would irretrievably destroy this future and perhaps ongoing defensive capability.
The covert nature of this operation would require a high degree of both secrecy as well as patriotic loyalty that must be examined as I am prone to say, in context, specifically in context of the era in which it was put into place. Those who may have continued to bear false witness may have done so due to frankly, their sense of loyalty and patriotism while some have disclosed from their perspective further from the center of this game, a genuine testimony that however, was not disclosed to them at that time. What we may have is a game within a game. The intentionally ambivalent nature of contradictory causations of this event produced by the military keeps the utility of this ploy for future uses intact, while the dirty little secret of deception toward it's own citizens in order to protect them, is forever sealed away behind the intentional scrim of a script of fiction meant to be read as a valid and compelling possibility.
The irony in this, if it is true, the vast majority of Ufology that inadvertently perpetuates this ruse are defacto operatives in a skewed patriotic frame that protects the interests of the methodology that they largely and rightly, at least to my mind, criticize. And so this tact remains in the hands of those who have undercut the credibility of democratic principles in the name of protecting them which continues to this day. I, for one would like to see the Soviet records of their immediate post war intelligence records in relation to Roswell in order to determine the veracity and effectiveness of this stage play, although it may be a formidable task, however, it may shed light on a sixty year old deception that has led Ufology off chasing a red herring, a wild goose or off on a fool's errand. If you go to the CIA website, there is a study published there on how the CIA has used the UFO meme to disguise other activities. Is this a complete list? I am doubtful simply based on common sense that is based on the CIA's past history.
Is this scenario of manipulation plausible, more so, than the equipment failure of a hypothetical space craft caused by lightning?

Yes much more plausible.
On a side note Bruce; this writing is quite accessible and might do well as part of a larger work.
Bruce asked: "Is this scenario of manipulation plausible, more so, than the equipment failure of a hypothetical space craft caused by lightning?"
Bruce,
Of course, the real problem with the promotion of "state secrets" and political gamesmanship is that they represent an opaque lack of honesty. When governments participate in this form of duplicity, what is really taking place is an overt subversion of truth. Truth cannot exist in such a toxic environment. Or, rather, truth cannot be distinguished from falsehood under the thrall of deliberate state production of misleading BS.
As you state above, this sort of ambiguity is at the very heart of state condoned counterespionage. Secrets are very hard to control in the messy environment of human activity. Secrets do get out, no matter how carefully guarded they may be. Since truth cannot be suppressed completely, the most basic tenet of "counter intelligence" is that the best place to "hide" the truth is in a hot steaming pile of bovine excrement. Once the truth is smeared with the smelly stuff, it is indistinguishable from the bull crap that buried it.
This kind of subterfuge is the bread and butter of spy agencies and producers of state propaganda. However, the deliberate subversion of truth results in a situation where truth and fiction both exist as relative "truths" simultaneously. In this scenario facts and fiction are indistinguishable from one another. Attempts to ferret out an "actual" truth from this deliberate ambiguity is an attempt to beat the operator in an operator manipulated shell game. It embodies the very fool's errand you propose.
Given that, I can as easily invert your above question and ask: "Is the equipment failure of a hypothetical spacecraft caused by lightning, more plausible than the manipulation of reality perpetrated by the US Government in order to convince the Soviets we have technology that kicks-ass on anything they could have ever imagined?"
Well this, then, defines ambiguity. But we can, at least remotely, test this hypothetical assertion: Did the Roswell event successfully indoctrinate the Soviets with damaging misinformation?
No, we cannot check their intelligence files for answers. But we can look at the long-term fallout of the original Roswell stories as told by both witnesses and media in 1947. For all intents and purposes, the Roswell story died on July 9, 1947 with the release of the USAAF story that the Roswell "saucer" was nothing more than a weather balloon. That story held for over 30 years. If not for Friedman's introduction to Jesse Marcel, that story may have held forever.
In the end it comes down to one irrefutable truth: the Roswell story is heavily tainted with bullshit. The relevant question remains rather hum-drum: which BS is true and which BS is just BS?
We are back to ambiguity again. Which ever answers you choose are more down to your stomach for relative types of BS rather than a cogent vetting of truth and fiction. And, having said that, despite my leaning more toward Roswell being "for real", the only intellectually tenable position, if we are all honest, is residing squarely on the fence......
Mike
That it remains the essence of it's ambiguity may confirm the nature of it's design. Either way, it catches lint on both sides of the fence. Either way, one would think the CIA would have had a leadership role in managing stagecraft not the USAF in of itself as divorced from the "central" intelligence. As a stage play, it rates kudos whichever ending is the alternate ending. If anyone knew the secret, I suspect a certain Mr Angleton did. He took that secret to the grave as well as untold numbers, correct? The witnesses may be patriots in an unexpected manner, and like a play, it has more twists and turns than a country road.
Bruce,
Thanks for your articles and inputs! These have been a great help to me in forming my own thoughts on the subject. Even if I reside on the other side of the fence, in the end, like reality itself, we are only choosing to believe whatever BS we are personally willing to believe.
After all, the acronym for belief systems is BS. I thank writer Aeolus Kephas for that wonderfully ironic and synchronistic insight. BS makes the Roswell story, and our world, go around.....
Mike,
We may be on opposite sides of the fence but we share the same landscape where we share refuting the denial of mass media and our social structures regarding what we do and don't know and no one knows where this will go or where it came from.
Its like taking a tennis racket to smoke at times..but there's hardly ever a dull moment..I look at blogs and essays and articles and before I begin to think in regard to the author...your serve on a match point.
Best Wishes
